Hello, my name is Echo Chernik and I am a professional artist with over 24 years experience. You can learn more about me on EchoChernik.com and Echo-X.com.

I have successfully used Kickstarter to produce nine (9) original works of art, five (5) books,  four (4) calendars and four card decks. All of them succeeded and have been fulfilled.
(Note: Some of my Kickstarters were run on my husband's Kickstarter account as Lazarus Chernik.)

This time, I would LOVE to create a tenth new work of art for my Cthulhu Pinup series. You can learn more about that series on EchoChernik.com/collections/cthulhu-giclees.

You can find the entire series on my DeviantArt gallery too.

Currently there is: Pie, Cupcake, Cookie, Chocolate Ice Cream, Strawberry Ice Cream, Vanilla Ice Cream, Champagne, Absinthe, Tequila, and now I ask for your support to make Rum.

One of the reasons I was gone from DeviantArt for so long was my appointment as the Coordinating Judge for the international Illustrators of the Future competition in Hollywood, CA.

For those who don't know - Illustrators of the Future is one of the most reputable competitions for aspiring illustrators in the world.

Here is why I think it is the best of all of them:

  1. It's free to enter.
  2. Submit work you have already done.
  3. You keep the copyright of all of your work.
  4. Rolling submissions: You can submit every 3 months (but only win once).
  5. Twelve winners every year win $500 and a statue.
  6. One Grand Prize Winner wins an extra $5,000 and a bigger statue.
  7. Win an all-expense trip to Hollywood, CA from anywhere in the world.
  8. Win a week long seminar on the business of illustration from the top names in the industry.
  9. Win a black-tie award ceremony on a Hollywood stage streamed live and on youtube.
  10. Get published in a best-selling book: Writers of the Future

The complete list of judges (past and present) is here: www.writersofthefuture.com/ill…

Here is a short list of other judges, past and present:
  • Frank Frazetta
  • Wil Eisner
  • Jack Kirby
  • Frank Kelly Fries
  • Larry Elmore
  • Dave Dorman
  • Bob Eggleton
  • and me
As Coordinating Judge, my job has several responsibilities. First, I go through all of the submissions and narrow them down to a select few as nominations for the rest of the judges to consider. I lead the seminar and coordinate with other Judges and Guest Lecturers. Best of all, I get to announce the Grand Prize Winner on stage and hand them their award statue, seeing the tears in their eyes.

This year I am taking on a new role. Every Illustrator Winner is given an assignment to illustrate one of 12 stories from that year's volume of Writers of the Future. Those stories are the winning entries from the sister competition Writers of the Future, with such amazing judges as Larry Niven, Nnedi Okorafor, and Orson Scott Card. As the new art director for these stories, I will be personally assisting winners create their best work for that publication. From those final 12 illustrations, the Grand Prize Winner will be selected.

Previous winners of Writers of the Future include Pat Rothfuss (The Name of the Wind), Nnedi Okorafor (Binti), and Dave Wolverton (The Runelords).

Writers of the Future and Illustrators of the Future are the legacy of L. Ron Hubbard, funded by his Trust and managed by Galaxy Press, developed for the exclusive purpose of promoting the best from new generations of science fiction and fantasy.

Ignore the trolls: So far, none of the winners have ever been Scientologists and no one has converted. I don't know a single judge of the writers or illustrators who is a member of the COS, either. It's an altruistic competition run by people who love the genres and want to encourage the future of it. If you are serious about writing or illustrating science fiction and fantasy, and are still considered an amateur - enter immediately. You literally have everything to gain and nothing to lose.

Echo is Back!

1 min read
Hello all,

I'm sorry to have vanished from DeviantArt for so long, but I was buried in commissions for nearly 2 years.

Among those projects were:

  • The Name of the Wind Art Decks, which included 32 original paintings of Name of the Wind characters, four vector Aces, two cards backs, two box designs, several vector background designs, and collateral. The Kickstarter was fulfilled in 2018 and you can buy the decks from me: www.echochernik.com/collection…
  • The Shadowrun Sixth World Tarot, which included 79 illustrations and 3 cards backs. You can buy the Tarot from me: www.echochernik.com/collection…
  • New Paintings for both my Fairy Tale Princess series and my Sultan's Favorite series.
  • More boxes for Celestial Seasonings.
  • Many brand new clients.
Thank you for your patience. I will be posting new art here over the next few weeks.

Any Sci-Fi/Fantasy illustrator anywhere is eligible to enter as long as:
  1. they are unpublished to be judged by famous professional illustrators
  2. they are capable of understanding English enough to enter the contest
The only criteria for winning is talent and skill.

It is free to enter (unlike other contests) and winners receive AMAZING prizes:
  • $1,000 for 12 winners
  • Additional $4,000 to one winner
  • A black-tie award ceremony in Hollywood, California at the FAMOUS Wilshire-Ebell theatre.
  • Amazing award statues for everyone!

About entering: Sci-Fi and Fantasy illustrators may submit once every three months per year. Every three months, three winners are selected and given $1,000. At the end of every year, the twelve winners are assigned an illustration for a story that will be published in Writers of the Future. In April of every year, the twelve total winners are brought to Hollywood, CA (travel and lodging paid by the contest) where they will meet each other, the judges, take a week long course on how to be a successful illustrator, and meet the writers of the stories that they illustrated (who are winners of the Writers of the Future award). One winner will be selected base on their final published illustration to receive the Golden Brush Award and an additional $4,000.

What the contest is:
The contest is a legacy funded by Galaxy Press as stipulated in the will of L. Ron Hubbard - who, as many know, was one of the most prolific Sci-Fi Fantasy writers of all time. Anyone from any background, nationality, religion, ethnicity, gender, sex, age, education level, (etc.) may enter and has an equal chance of winning.

What the contest is not:
The contest is independent of the Church of Scientology. It is not funded by the CoS in any way. Judges are not members of the CoS. There is no encouragement to know anything about the CoS before, during, or after the contest.

This is as pure an opportunity as any young artist will ever have.
